Free “Safe at Home” Pilot Launches for Racialized Senior Women in the Greater Toronto Area
Toronto, ON – Global Medical Intelligence Group (GMIG) is launching a free Safe at Home pilot program for racialized senior women in the Greater Toronto Area. The program provides enhanced safety, organization, and real-time support during healthcare encounters.
Older adults make up a growing share of Toronto’s population. Over one quarter (27%) of adults aged 65 and older in private households live alone, with women more likely than men to do so. Approximately 41% of adults 65 and older in Toronto are racialized. Racialized seniors experience higher rates of poverty and health inequities compared to non-racialized seniors. Research also shows that racialized older adults and immigrants face more barriers to accessing and navigating healthcare, including language challenges, discrimination, and a lack of culturally safe services.
The Safe at Home pilot is designed for Black, Indigenous, and other racialized women aged 60 and older in the GTA who seek additional support before, during, and after medical encounters. The pilot will:
Help participants organize key health information in a secure system.
Create a simple emergency and contact plan for them and their families to follow.
Provide scheduled check‑in calls from a trained health liaison.
Offer live phone support during emergencies or urgent healthcare visits (within defined hours) to help participants and families understand the situation and identify important questions.
Provide follow-up after emergency visits or hospital stays to clarify instructions and outline next steps.
The pilot is non-clinical. GMIG does not diagnose, prescribe, or replace physicians or emergency services. All clinical decisions remain with participants and their healthcare providers. GMIG’s role is to provide navigation, organization, and advocacy grounded in racial equity and culturally safe practice.
How to apply
Racialized senior women in the GTA, or their family members, can apply for the free Safe at Home pilot by contacting GMIG or completing a short intake form on the organization’s website.
